  Animal rights Mars candy kills!!

PETA has uncovered gruesome evidence that candy giant Mars has been paying experimenters to conduct deadly tests on mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. We're launching a worldwide boycott of Snickers, M&M's, Twix, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Starburst, Dove, Skittles, and other Mars-made products until the company has a heart and stops hurting animals.

Right now, Mars is funding a study at the University of California, San Francisco, in which experimenters force-feed rats by shoving plastic tubes down their throats. The animals are then killed and cut open.

Mars has also paid experimenters to do the following:

* Force mice to swim in a pool of water and paint and find a hidden platform to avoid drowning—only to be killed later
* Surgically attach plastic tubes to guinea pigs' carotid arteries and inject cocoa ingredients into their jugular veins to induce dramatic decreases in blood pressure
* Force rabbits to eat high-cholesterol diets with varying amounts of cocoa and then cut out and examine primary blood vessels to their hearts

Not one of these tests is required by law for candy. Mars' chief competitor, Hershey's, has already signed PETA's statement of assurance pledging never to conduct or fund tests on animals.

We need your help to end Mars' cruel experiments! Visit our new http://MarsCandyKills.com campaign Web site to find out what you can do to help.

Anonymous writes "Guest workers and palmers, involved in fatigue duties on the territory of one of the most famous monasteries in Russia, packed homeless kittens in sacks and left them die an awful death at the rubbish dump."

Animal rights Developers no longer allowed to bury gopher tortoises alive

Gopher TortoiseWEST PALM BEACH - Developers will no longer be allowed to bury gopher tortoises alive during construction under a moratorium approved Wednesday by state wildlife commissioners.

Under current gopher tortoise rules, developers are allowed to seek permits to bury them alive rather than relocate them during construction projects. About 70,000 gopher tortoises have been buried in the past 14 years under the state permitting system.

The tortoises, which can live for weeks before suffocating after entombment, burrow in sandy, dry areas such as dunes and have survived for 60 million years. Biologists estimate their numbers have dropped by up to 80 percent in the last century due to coastal development.

The commission also voted Wednesday during its meeting in Melbourne to add another level of protection for the tortoise, upgrading its status from species of special concern to threatened.

However, the status change won't take effect for at least several more months while a new management plan is being developed that aims to limit future burials or eliminate them altogether.

It remains illegal to take, possess, transport or sell gopher tortoises or their eggs, except by obtaining a state permit. The moratorium on burying gopher tortoises will go into effect July 30.

The Florida Home Builders Association has said it supports measures to protect the tortoise, regardless of additional relocation costs.

Animal rights Wolfgang Puck bans foie gras, caged chickens

Source: 9news.com

Wolfgang PuckLOS ANGELES (AP) - Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is cooking up kinder, gentler menus.

As part of a new initiative to fight animal cruelty, Puck said Thursday he will no longer serve foie gras, the fatty liver produced by overfeeding ducks and geese.

His 14 fine-dining restaurants, more than 80 fast-casual eateries and 43 catering venues will use only eggs from hens that have lived cage-free; veal from roaming calves; and lobsters that have been removed from their ocean traps quickly to avoid crowded holding tanks.

Animal rights Troy Gentry Accused of Killing Tame Bear

Story here

Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been accused of killing a tame black bear that federal officials say he tagged as killed in the wild.

Gentry, 39, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, of Sandstone, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in connection with a sealed indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis.

Authorities allege that Gentry purchased the bear from Greenly, a wildlife photographer and hunting guide, then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on Greenly's property in October 2004.
