Culture Vegan: Plant a word, watch it grow

By William Safire The New York Times
Edited by Jared Carrot Juice
Monday, January 31, 2005

WASHINGTON 'By all that is sacred in our hopes for the human race," wrote the passionate poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1813, "I conjure those who love happiness and truth, to give a fair trial to the vegetable system." The cardinal rule of that blithe spirit: "Never take any substance into the stomach that once had life."

A few decades after Shelley's endorsement, the diet was being called vegetarian, a word popularized by the formation of the Vegetarian Society at Ramsgate, England, in 1847. After its planting, that word grew (from the Latin vegetare, "to grow") for a century.

Culture No Meat, No Eggs, No Dairy

The Vegan Sisters of Memphis provide support and education.

Bianca Phillips
Source: The Memphis Flyer

Giving up meat isn't easy, and when many vegetarians finally get past their meat cravings, they stop there, content with a diet containing dairy and eggs. But a couple of Memphis sisters want to help people take it to the next level. With their recently formed group, Vegan Sisters of Memphis/Black Vegetarian Society of Tennessee (VSM), they hope to spread the word on the physical and mental benefits of giving up animal by-products, while giving the small local vegan community a united voice.

Through workshops, seminars, retreats, and one-on-one counseling, Bastet Ankh Re and Raminyah Netri Men-t will teach people how to become vegan (no meat, eggs, dairy, or animal by-products in food, clothing, or other products), how to stick with the diet, and how to avoid certain foods that can cause long-term health problems. On December 18th, they'll be at Wild Oats lecturing on "The Hazards of Sugar and Salt."

Culture Free Range Meat and the Factory Farm

willpeavy writes "By Will Peavy
wpeavy@mail.usf.edu

I’ve often come across environmentalists and animal advocates, of varying
degrees, who are thoroughly opposed to the practice of factory farming – and
thus oppose this practice by boycotting industrialized animal production and
instead consuming meat from organic and free range family farms. While I
applaud their decision to become more conscientious consumers; I’d like to
ask – where does making the switch to consuming organic and free range family
farmed meat lead us? "

Culture Reasons for going vegetarian vary

Animal rights, population control among rationale for change in diet.

source: South Bend Tribune

By KATRINA BABIN

Beef, chicken, pork, veal, whatever animal stock one can think of -- it is the staple of diets worldwide. It is also the antithesis of the diet and lifestyle of those select few known as vegetarians.

Vegetarianism is a rapidly growing trend, especially as more information about the effects of rendering animal products becomes available.
